Coleus Fun Facts

Coleus (Solenostemon scutellarioides) is part of the mint family, and they’re very popular house and garden plants. Their cousins include basil, oregano, peppermint, salvia, Swedish ivy, and thyme.

According to Dave’s Garden, The botanical name is from the Greek "Koleos", meaning sheath, it refers to the male portions of Coleus flowers, the stamens, which are fused into a tube or sheath. Coleus is also called Painted Leaf, or Flame Nettle.

Coleus is said to have potential treatment for asthma, bronchitis, glaucoma, congestive heart failure, and other conditions. Some species also used to flavor food by some people. I can remember my mom using them to add flavoring to her pot! That was interesting to see as I did my research.

There are said to be over 600 species of Coleus.

They come in lots of colors shapes and patterns.
